LOVE LIFE SUNDAY

BATON ROUGE, LA. (June 23, 2023) – This Sunday, June 25th, will be the first annual Love Life Sunday.  LA Black Advocates for Life has invited Pastors around the state to preach a message of life.  The goal is to have our communities Pray, Promote, and Preserve.  We must pray for men, women, and childrenthat fear of circumstances will not lead to death. Promote by speaking up and protecting the vulnerable. We must be vigilant, active, and involved in all matters concerning life if we are to Preserve it.

Our Mayor, Sharon Weston-Broome, has issued proclamations for June 25, 2023 as Love Life Sunday.  Ministry leaders are joining together believing God has called them to a time such as this to lead our community by promoting a message of Love and Life for all.

“Like most of us, I have witnessed for too long our communities suffering from the seeds of violence, neglect, dishonor, and the dehumanization of life. I firmly believe that God is again calling upon His church to LEAD by example in promoting a message of love and life to hurting people. I am asking you to please join me along with Pastors from across the state on Sunday, June 25th, which has been declared as Love Life Sunday, to celebrate LIFE as the Body of Christ! On this day we request that you share a message devoted to honoring life from the womb and beyond.”

– Apostle Mike Wicker Co-Director of La. Black Advocates for Life (LABAL)

Louisiana lawmakers say hospital ‘grossly misinterpreted’ law that allows exceptions to abortion ban

After a Baton Rouge woman was denied an abortion for a fetus without a skull, state Sen. Katrina Jackson and 35 other lawmakers said the hospital “grossly misinterpreted” the state’s exceptions to the abortion ban in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

“We are issuing this statement today to provide further clarity, although the law in conjunction with the emergency rule is very clear that this young lady is within the exception,” the statement read.

Black History Month is Rooted in Love

By Tara Wicker
State Director, Louisiana Black Advocates for Life

Today Valentine’s Day. This Day of LOVE, Feb, 14, is imbedded in the heart of Black History Month.

As we remember the heartfelt meaning of Valentine’s Day, and after the flowers have withered and the chocolates are long gone, let’s take time to reflect and remember this most memorable quote by Wayne W. Dyer, “Whatever the question, LOVE is the answer.” May this forever serve as a powerful reminder to each of us that whatever we do as a nation, people, or person, it must be imbedded in LOVE, otherwise it truly has no power, potential, or productivity.

This month, as we take time to reflect, honor, and celebrate the multitude of accomplishments of African Americans in this great country, we must do it with an understanding that the true measure and meaning of any country, movement, or people is their ability to love beyond their seen and unseen differences.

Far beyond this day and this month, we must all know and believe that LOVE is truly the most powerful weapon on the planet, and if we use it in the way that God intended it to be, this world would be a much better place.

This month we honor the lives and accomplishments of so many great African Americans. Dr. Mildred F. Jefferson was the first Black woman to graduate Harvard Medical School and the founder of the National Right to Life Committee. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate only LOVE can do that.” Rosa Parks said, “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is RIGHT.”

As we remember the accomplishments of so many, let us reflect and remember the millions of unborn African American babies whose lives are lost each day through abortion. May this issue break our hearts so completely that an overwhelming LOVE for them takes over and this tragedy comes to an end.

2 Opelousas Catholic Students Receive Inaugural Emerging Leaders Scholarships

Louisiana Black Advocates for Life, which seeks to encourage the meaningful participation of members of the Black community in the process of building and maintaining a culture of life in Louisiana, recently awarded two $4,000 scholarships to students at Opelousas Catholic High School.

Dr. Kathy Allen, State Director for Louisiana Black Advocates for Life, made the presentations of the St. Landry Emerging Leaders Scholarship Program in May during a mass at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. The recipients of the inaugural scholarships are McKenzie Chevis, an 11th-grader, and Brailey Major, a senior. They were also recognized for their spirit, academics and leadership skills.

The St. Landry Emerging Leaders Scholarship Program was designed to create an opportunity for Black students to access a quality, Christian-focused education that will lead to the development of school and community leaders, pro-life advocates for the born and unborn, and social justice influencers and leaders.

Scholarships of up to $4,000 per year per student are funded for use toward tuition or other directly related expenses to matriculation at Opelousas Catholic High School or the Schools of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. The goal of the program is to eventually have an emerging leader at each level of high school – freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior.

The scholarship program has been instituted in St. Landry Parish in association with Holy Ghost Catholic Church, one of the largest African-American Catholic congregations in the United States. Black Advocates for Life would like to expand the program in the future to other parts of the state.

“We have lost several generations of Black life to abortion since the passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973,” said Dr. Allen. “Sadly, the yearly loss of Black unborn life in Louisiana has steadily increased from 60% in 2014 to 65% in 2020. In the midst of this tragic reality, the Black Advocates Emerging Leaders scholarship program provides an avenue for talented young people to become a powerful generation of pro-life advocates who can influence change in the communities they know best.”
